Home and shop film

Security, privacy and solar film for glass you already have

Film goes onto the glass you've already got, usually from inside, and changes what that glass does. It can make a street-facing pane private, take the heat out of a west-facing room on a sticky Hamilton afternoon, or help a shop window hold together when it's hit. We connect you with independent local pros who fit film on house and shop windows, alongside our other home window services. Car tint is a separate trade, and we don't handle it.

Security film

Security and safety film

Security film is a thick, clear film bonded to the inside of the glass. When the pane breaks, the film holds the pieces together. It slows someone down and keeps shards off the floor. It doesn't make glass unbreakable, and it holds best when anchored into the frame rather than trimmed to the edge.

It suits glass doors and ground-floor windows at home as well as shops.

Heat and glare

Solar and heat-control film

Hamilton summers run long and humid, and a south- or west-facing room can get hot and glary by late afternoon. Solar film reflects or absorbs part of the sun's heat and cuts glare and UV, which slows fading on floors and furniture.

Films range from nearly clear to tinted or mirrored. Darker ones do more for heat but change the look and the daylight. Ask to see samples on your own glass.

For shops

Storefront film

Hamilton's main streets are organised into business improvement areas, from Ottawa Street in Crown Point to Westdale Village. Film shows up on their storefronts in three ways.

  1. Security film after a break-in

Replace the glass through storefront glass repair, then film the new pane so it holds together next time.

  2. Heat and glare on the display

Solar film keeps a sunny window from cooking the display and fading stock, without blocking the view in.

  3. Privacy and signage

Frosted bands for offices and treatment rooms, or decorative film with your hours. The same pros handle other commercial glass.

Privacy

Privacy and decorative film

In the Lower City, plenty of row houses and semis have a front window a few steps from the sidewalk. Film keeps the front room to yourself without living with the blinds shut.

One-way reflective film

Mirror-like from the brighter side, so it gives daytime privacy. At night, with lights on inside, it flips, so keep the blinds for evenings.

Decorative patterns

Stripes, gradients or a leaded-glass look for sidelights and transoms. It can come off later.

Before you film

Film on sealed units and old glass: check first

Film changes how glass takes on heat. On a big double-pane sealed unit, a dark film can make the inside pane run hotter, and some window warranties mention film. That doesn't rule it out; the pro should check your glass and the film maker's guidance, and you should check your window paperwork if it's still under warranty.

Cracked or loose panes should be fixed before filming. Film won't clear fog between the panes; that needs a new sealed unit.

What affects the quote

Price factors

Film is priced by the amount of glass and the kind of film. The pro will ask about:

  • How much glass, and how many panes
  • Privacy, solar, security or decorative film
  • Whether security film is anchored into the frame
  • Old, peeling film that has to come off first
  • High windows, ladders, or glass behind a display

Tell us the goal (privacy, heat or security) and send a photo of the window from inside. That's enough for a first answer.
