Vinyl and hybrid frames
Vinyl (PVC) and hybrid replacement windows, explained
Vinyl, also called PVC, is the everyday frame of window replacement, and in a lot of Hamilton houses it's the obvious pick. Not every house, though. On a designated property or in a heritage district, the City expects replacements to match the originals, and vinyl rarely does. We're a free referral service: we connect you with independent local installers who quote vinyl and hybrid, and who'll tell you if your current window is worth fixing first.

Why vinyl
Why vinyl dominates replacement work
Vinyl never needs paint, it's made to measure, and hollow chambers in the frame help it insulate. For houses built since the 1980s, a big share of Hamilton, it's usually a like-for-like swap.
Quality varies. Ask about reinforcement in big frames, how the corners are joined, the glass, and how the installer seals around the frame. Our replacement windows page covers how the job runs, and the windows overview lists the rest.
Hybrid
Hybrid frames
A hybrid pairs a vinyl or wood interior with a tougher exterior skin, often aluminum or a composite, for a stiffer, more colour-stable outside.
Where they make sense
Big openings, dark exterior colours, and a slimmer frame line than plain vinyl.
What to weigh
They cost more, and makers use the word for different builds. Ask what each face of the frame is made of.
Styles
Casement, awning, slider and hung styles
Casement
Hinged at the side and cranked open. Seals tightly and opens fully for air.
Awning
Hinged at the top, so it can stay open in light rain.
Slider
Sashes glide sideways. Worth checking sliders and hung windows for a repair first.
Single- and double-hung
The traditional look, closest to an older house's originals.
Heritage houses
Heritage districts: where vinyl may not be approved
On a designated property or in a heritage conservation district, replacing windows needs a Heritage Permit, and the City's heritage windows guidance says replacements should be custom-made to match the originals in material, moulding profiles, muntins and joinery. Standard vinyl doesn't meet that bar for original wood sash.
The City would rather you kept and repaired originals; see wood window repair. If earlier owners already put in vinyl, ask the City's heritage staff what they'd accept, and read our heritage district guide. Elsewhere, a same-size, same-spot replacement needs no building permit unless a fire rating applies; bigger openings do (City building permits).
What affects the quote
What drives the price
Every window is built to order, so the quote follows your list:
- How many windows, their sizes and styles
- Vinyl or hybrid, and the colours
- Double or triple glazing and coatings
- Retrofit into the old frame, or full-frame replacement
- Trim, capping and any sill repair
- Upper floors, bays and basement openings
A window list with rough sizes lets you compare quotes fairly.
Colour and heat
Dark colours on sunny walls
Vinyl softens as it heats. A dark frame on a south or west wall soaks up far more sun than a white one, and over a long, humid Hamilton summer that can mean bowing or binding. If you want a dark outside on a sunny wall, ask how the product is rated for it, or look at a hybrid.
Ratings
Ratings to check: ENERGY STAR and NAFS performance class
ENERGY STAR in Canada uses one national standard with no regional zones. Ask for the certification of the exact product quoted.
NAFS performance class covers air, water and wind. The Ontario Building Code sets a minimum; a higher grade is worth asking about for exposed windows on the Mountain, where the wind is stronger than in the Lower City.
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program offers a rebate for ENERGY STAR windows after a home energy assessment, as part of two or more upgrades. There's no City of Hamilton program for ordinary window replacement. Check current rules before you count on it.
